National Respiratory Research Strategy
The Canadian Thoracic Society is leading the development of a comprehensive national respiratory research strategy in collaboration with The Lung Association, the Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health and partners from across the country. Through this strategy, the CTS aims to build research capacity, leverage research funding, support researchers and research programs, develop a national respiratory research network and facilitate knowledge translation. Its ultimate goal is making measurable improvements to respiratory health outcomes in Canada.

Research funding
The Canadian Lung Association funds research and research training through the CTS at the national level. We offer several competitions for research funding.
Provincial Lung Association Grant Awards Program - National Grant Review (NGR)

To qualify for funding, candidates are asked to complete two (2) steps:
1. Register: Please register at www.ngr.myreviewroom.com by November 18, 2011.
You are required to provide your name, institution, identify the type of research (clinical or basic science), the project title, and a maximum one page abstract.
2. Submit Application: The original application must be sent to your Provincial Lung Association. ONE (1) electronic copy of the application form and the appendices, in Word or PDF must be submitted to the Canadian Lung Association via www.ngr.myreviewroom.com by December 7, 2011 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Lung Association, Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) – Research Fellowship and Studentship Program

The Lung Association offers two types of research trainee awards to the medical and scientific community in the field of respiratory health: post-doctoral fellowships and PhD graduate studentships.
If you're not a CTS member, or if your
has lapsed, renew or join the CTS now to be eligible for this funding. |
Priority will be given to a Canadian citizen, permanent Canadian resident or landed immigrant. These awards are normally held at Canadian institutions.
To be eligible for a CTS Fellowship or Studentship Award the:
Applicant and supervisor must be CTS members.
Studentship applicants - should be enrolled or accepted in a graduate (thesis based) program at the Doctoral level at a Canadian academic institution. Individuals who have applied to a graduate program but have not received acceptance may apply for a Studentship award. The award, however, will be conditional on acceptance into the program.
Fellowship applicants - should be working under supervision of a faculty member at an accredited Canadian academic institution. Under special circumstances, an applicant may pursue a fellowship in another country; however, the applicant must justify why he/she could not find the same kind of training in Canada and he/she must have plans to pursue a career in research in Canada. |

Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS)/ European Respiratory Society (ERS) – Peter Macklem Fellowship Award

| The joint CTS/ERS Peter Macklem Fellowship is a newly created fellowship program to build capacity and expertise in the area of respiratory health and to promote excellence in research through 1-year funding opportunities towards research training and research projects in Canada or Europe. The CLA/CTS awards one fellowship and the ERS awards one fellowship per year. One awardee from Canada will train in Europe and one awardee from Europe will train in Canada. |
For candidates going to Canada
This award must be held at a Canadian institution.
To be eligible for a CTS/ERS Peter Macklem Fellowship Award the:- Candidate should be either a member of the CTS or of the ERS, independently from the mobility scheme applied for (incoming to Europe or to Canada).
- Candidate should be actively engaged in respiratory research/practice and have appropriate scientific or medical qualifications. Candidates must be postgraduates holding a university degree in the field of respiratory medicine/science (MD, MSc, PhD, MD-PhD) or equivalent. As a minimum requirement candidates need to have graduated with an MD or MSc or equivalent degree at the time of application. In addition, candidates may also be qualified healthcare professionals (non-MD) working in respiratory medicine/health (nurses, physiotherapists, respiratory function technologists, allied respiratory health professionals).
- Candidate must possess appropriate professional qualifications and experience according to the specific Fellowship applied for.
Applications must be post-marked no later than JANUARY 31st 2012. Send one (1) original to the Canadian Lung Association and send one (1) electronic copy via the cts.myreviewroom.com website by JANUARY 31st.
For candidates going to Europe
This award must be held at a European institution.
The ERS Long-Term Research Fellowship Rules & Regulations will apply (please refer to attachment). The candidate should use the same online application form as for any other ERS LTRF application via the website:www.ersnet.org/ers-funding/fellowships

| The purpose of this funding opportunity is to build Canadian capacity and expertise in the area of respiratory health and to promote excellence in research through training awards. The priority for this fellowship competition will focus upon the study of airflow obstruction and the associated diseases of airflow obstruction. This funding will be aimed at improving Canadian research into the pathophysiology, cell biology, population health and health systems research focused upon diseases such as asthma and COPD. |
Eligibility criteria for all CIHR research funding programs apply. The business office of the institution of an eligible Nominated Principal Applicant generally administers CIHR funds.
